Behind fashion trends

An interesting idea: fashion trends are not random; they reflect the quality that we feel is missing in society. A culture torn apart by war will be attracted to a simple and calm style, a culture that feels overly controlled might like a style that is exuberant or maybe rough and natural.

This applies not just to cultures but also to individuals. It might be useful to ask what missing quality attracts a person to a style.

I am not sure I believe it without hesitation but I will try to think about it when I meet someone who finds beauty in something unorthodox.
